Sabina wants Relay for Life team

Cancer survivor Sabina Reddy is looking for fellow survivors and friends to take part in the second County Kildare Relay for Life, being held on 6/7 September, writes Brian Byrne.

The event is run by the Irish Cancer Society and is being held on the Curragh Racecourse. It will involve a continuous 24-hour relay walk around a set course at the location, to fundraise and also raise awareness of cancer.

The Relay kicks off at 5pm on the evening of September 6, with the first walkers being cancer survivors.

Sabina wants a team from Kilcullen to take part, and she needs names of participants in advance in order to provide numbers to the organisers. All who sign up will get a distinctive tee-shirt for the occasion.

At dusk on the opening night, 'Candles of Hope' will be lit and placed around the Relay circuit. There will also be music, and a carnival atmosphere through the event.

Each team will have a tent at the course, from which they will raise funds for the Relay. "I need help and ideas for this," she says. "The fundraiser should be simple, but the tea/coffee and face-painting have been allocated to other groups already."

The Relay for Life was established in the 1980s in the US, and has become a global initiative. The Kildare event started last year in Sarsfields Football Club, but this year's is already on track to being much bigger.

Contact Sabina at 087 6807139 to help form the Kilcullen Team, to give your name as a survivor, and to buy a Candle of Hope for €5.
