Flowers anniversary event for Yellow Bog Church

The 200th anniversary of St John's Church in Yellow Bog will be celebrated with a Flowers Festival in June, writes Brian Byrne.

The event is being organised by Adrienne Thompson and will be held on the weekend of 26-28 of the month. It will include a reception for sponsors and will conclude with a Service of Praise.

According to author and historian James Durney, the present church was erected in the early 1800s on a site which was possibly where a previous church had been built to replace the ancient one beside the round tower of Old Kilcullen.

Various local families are interred in the Yellow Bog graveyard surrounding St John's, many of whom are commemorated with plaques and stained glass windows.

The families include the Blackers of Castlemartin, and some of the items in the church were donated by them. These include a Telford organ and an oak panelling in the chancel.

The church also has details of some of the local men killed while serving with the British forces in WW1, who are commemorated in the church.

We'll provide more details of the event as we get closer to the time.
