Road improvements 'could endanger pedestrians'

Concerns are being raised in Brannockstown that an improved road surface currently being provided between the Ballymore Road junction and the T-junction with the Milemill Road will result in increased danger to pedestrians, writes Brian Byrne.

The issue reported to the Diary relates to the apparent unavailability of money to repair and maintain the footpath along that stretch of road which is currently in bad repair.

A local resident says the works in train will probably worsen the condition of the footpath, which may 'make it dangerous to use during winter months'.

"The more serious issue is that no traffic calming measures are being put in place on any section of the road," says Paul Aspell. "At present the road becomes a racetrack between the hours of 7am to 9am and 5pm to 7pm and the improved condition of the main road will allow traffic to achieve even greater speeds when travelling through the village."
