Kilcullen means Business

This is a new section of the Kilcullen Diary which concentrates on enterprise and business in our town. Over coming weeks and months we will be adding links to our profiles of local businesses, of every size and activity, which will endeavour to showcase what Kilcullen has to offer in enterprise.

Reviving the neglected bathroom

"They don't pay much attention to bathrooms on TV programmes about home refurbishment," muses Ger Dooley of the Kildare Bathroom Company. "Yet they're the most cost effective way of giving a home a lift."

He's right. Even TV guru of home makeovers Dermot Bannon doesn't give bathrooms much programme space. Living rooms get into dispute, kitchen handles raise controversy, the colour or size of windows can apparently almost close down a build. But bathrooms just get, well, flushed away?

Not at the Kildare Bathroom Company. Business has grown steadily over the last three years at their premises in the Link Business Park, with customers visiting from an ever widening geographical base, stretching from Dublin to Kilkenny and Tipperary as well as significantly distant points east and west.

Mobile games theatres a Kilcullen woman's winner

So what do you do when you have to set up entertainment for a birthday party with a dozen youngsters who have long outgrown bouncy castles? writes Brian Byrne.

That was Majella Leighton’s conundrum a few years ago when she needed to arrange a party for her son and his friends, all gamers. But there were only a couple of game consoles in the home.

She and her husband Paul, who have lived in Kilcullen for ten years, managed to gather loans of some extra consoles from friends, and the party went off fine. But the problem triggered a business idea for Majella, who was on a break from her work in senior management in the hotel industry so as to have time to look after her children. READ MORE

The Curiosity of Curious Quirkes

It’s often the case that a new business can start almost by accident, writes Brian Byrne, and that could truly be said of a young Kilcullen woman’s craft venture, Curious Quirkes.

And no, that’s not a typo … the spelling of ‘Quirkes’ is deliberate, a quirky take on ‘quirk’ which represents the underlying ethos of Niamh O’Connor’s enterprise. READ MORE

Gail's Rails for Everywoman

Sometimes it takes a crisis to trigger a life direction change, writes Brian Byrne. For Gail Murphy, that's absolutely true.

It came suddenly, this year. An unanticipated family illness cascaded into a situation where her husband was in hospital for a long period, unable to work in their corporate clothing business. With income to the household reduced seriously, Gail had to up her own personal business game. READ MORE
