1916 badges available from Library

A 1916 Commemoration badge designed by a 9-year-old pupil of St Brigid's NS in Ballysax is available free from Libraries throughout the county, writes Brian Byrne.

The badge commemorates all those from Kildare who took part in the 1916 Rising, and apart from the many families still living here who have an interest in the matter, it would also be of particular interest to relevant family members living abroad.

"Kilcullen's 1916 connections are strong," says local Librarian Julie O'Donoghue, who has stocks of the badges for distribution. "I think there could be descendants of involved families who might like to have such a souvenir."

Julie is inviting those abroad to contact her, or friends and family here, if they'd like the keepsake.

Designer Luke Hand is in fourth class and he won a prize of €100 for his work, chosen by Kildare County Council’s Decade of Commemorations Committee. The centrepiece of his badge is a St Brigid's Cross, representing Kildare.
